How to Plan a Trip to France: Sustainable Tips for Your French Adventure

Planning a trip is an exciting part of your next adventure but not everyone loves the planning stage, for some, just booking a flight is enough. There is a lot to consider when planning your trip and if you’re trying to travel mindfully, it can feel overwhelming. Panic not, by following this guide, your stress-free holiday is closer than you think.

France is not only famous for its rich history, culture, and refined cuisine but also for its breathtaking natural beauty. For mindful travellers, France offers a plethora of opportunities to enjoy a sustainable and environmentally friendly travel experience. From charming small villages to bustling cities with eco-friendly initiatives, there are numerous ways to explore this beautiful country while minimising your carbon footprint.

Budgeting:

First things first, a realistic budget sets the tone for a stress-free trip. France can be surprisingly affordable, especially if you avoid peak tourist season (June to August and December to January). September is the ideal time to enjoy the warm weather without the crowds. Try exploring charming towns outside the big cities to avoid crowds and keep costs down too. Hostels, Airbnbs, and even couchsurfing (if you're feeling adventurous) offer fantastic alternatives to pricey hotels.

Choosing Your French Fancy:

Okay, so where do you want to go? Glittering Paris? Sun-soaked beaches in the South? Rolling vineyards of Bordeaux? Do your research and pick a destination that aligns with your interests and – here's the eco-twist – travel time! Trains in France are lightning-fast and relatively inexpensive so consider destinations easily accessible by rail instead of flying long distances. Lyon, Marseilles, Bordeaux and Lille are all easily accessed from Paris in under 4 hours. Use the SNCF app to book your train tickets and avoid the queues (and possible need for translation) at the station.

Location, Location, Location (and Sustainability):

Now, let's delve deeper into your chosen location. Look for eco-friendly accommodation options with certifications like "Clef Verte" (Green Key). These places are committed to reducing their environmental impact, so you can rest easy knowing your stay is doing good for the planet.

Building Your French Adventure:

Alright, time to map out your itinerary! Instead of jam-packing your days with sights, prioritise slow travel and experiences that immerse you in local culture. Think farmers markets overflowing with fresh produce, leisurely bike rides through quaint villages, or volunteering through the Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) initiative.

Booking with a Green Conscience:

When booking tours and activities, seek out companies with sustainable practices. Look for certifications or read reviews that mention eco-friendly initiatives. Remember, supporting local businesses also injects money directly into the community, fostering a more sustainable tourism model. Tripadvisor now offers eco-tours and booking an experience through Airbnb allows you to connect with local businesses and find some hidden gems.

Paperwork Panache:

Double-check visa and passport requirements well in advance – nobody wants a last-minute scramble! Depending where you are travelling from, you may or may not need a visa but you can use the République Française online visa assistant to easily check. Pack light to avoid baggage fees (and the environmental impact of hauling extra stuff around). Most importantly, bring a reusable water bottle and a reusable shopping bag – small steps that make a big difference (check out our Guide to Sustainable Travel Gear for more tips).

There you have it! With a little planning and these handy tips, you can explore France in a way that's kind to your wallet, the planet, and – of course – yourself.

Now, get out there and make some magical French memoirs!  Bonnes vacances!
